Important information for bringing your class to Careers Hive
We are delighted you and your students are attending Careers Hive 2024 and we look forward to welcoming you.
Please read through all the information provided on this page carefully and share with all adults who are accompanying your school.
Preparing for Your Visit
Make sure you have appropriate supervision arrangements in place
Children under the age of 16 are the responsibility of the teacher/group leader and must be supervised at all times during their visit. A ratio of 1 adult to 15 children is required at the museum.
Inform us about any support requirements
If any young people within your group have additional support requirements, please let us know by emailing careershive@scifest.co.uk before your visit so we can adapt and/or support your visit accordingly. Please also share any other relevant information about your class – for example autism stressors/triggers, students with English as a second language etc. – to help us prepare for your visit.

On the Day
Arrival
You will be allocated an arrival time in your pre-visit email. This will allow your group time to visit the cloakroom, toilets, meet your Experience Guide and travel to the area in the museum where you first activity will take place. If you are running late on the day please call the Careers Hive team on 0131 553 0321. Due to scheduling constraints your session time will be reduced if you arrive late.
There are two coach drop-off points outside the museum on Chambers Street. Please make sure you enter by the door that has been allocated to your group in your pre-visit email (see map below).
Your group will be allocated a storage box in the cloakroom to leave jackets. As this area is not locked, please ensure students do not leave valuable unattended. Bags are to be carried around the museum by students, so please advise your students to pack light.
Activities
Careers Hive is made up of two one-hour activity slots. The order your group visits each activity can be found on your schedule.
Life After Leaving School: A programme of inspiring, short discussions led by early career STEM professionals looking at the career path they have taken so far and what influenced their decisions along the way. This activity is hosted in the Auditorium.
Experience STEM: A hands-on exhibition where volunteers from STEM organisations engage students with interactive activities. Through these activities and themed exhibition panels, attendees will explore the future challenges we expect to face and jobs that may be involved in solving these issues. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Think Tank for a one-on-one speed career discussion. This activity is hosted in the Grand Gallery.
People you will see during your visit
- Careers Hive Experience Guides (dressed in lime-green vests) will meet you upon arrival and guide you through your visit
- Careers Hive STEM volunteers (dressed in purple t-shirts), who currently work for STEM companies or in STEM-based careers, are in the Grand Gallery and are on hand to talk to students and teachers about their experiences, answer questions and to take part in the Think Tank
- Visitor Experience staff (dressed in lilac shirts and navy blazers) look after the galleries and help visitors find their way around
- National Museum Curators (wearing museum name badges) can be found at the museum activity in the Grand Gallery and are experts in museum objects

After Your Visit
Evaluation
We are committed to running Careers Hive annually and want to make future events as meaningful and relevant as possible for staff and students. Accordingly, we will be working with an external provider to evaluate Careers Hive 2024. They will be in touch with you after the event to gain feedback from you and your students. It’s crucial that we get your thoughts to help us evaluate and plan ahead, so we really appreciate your support.
Online Workshop
To extend your Careers Hive experience you will receive access to our Skills & Strengths Workshop. This digital resource provides an opportunity for students to consider their skills and strengths and what type of job they may be suited. Access includes on-demand video delivery of the workshop by our team, a detailed lesson plan and associated resources.
